Basic Search Engine Optimization for Internet Marketers

Here’s yet another article submitted by Shelley Allen, I’m seriuosly thinking of giving her her own section. Shelley provides unique content that is useful to the reader and gives search engines exactly what they need, quality content.

Shelleys’ article mentions unique content and article marketing and how it can get you quality one way links to your sites. Search engines are changing every week, they are getting smarter, it’s not all about page rank, it’s about unique content, it’s about quality, none spammy sites, search engine optimization is obviously a part of it, but it’s only a very small part, all those sites that are over optimized  are going to see their listings dwindle more and more.

Basic Search Engine Optimization for Internet Marketers

What is a Search Engine?

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

What do I need to do to optimise my website for the Search Engines?

These and many more questions like them, are constantly in the forefront of an internet marketers mind when they are just beginning their career on the internet.

In the following article I will attempt to address these questions in a simple and easy to understand manner which will allow even the most inexperienced marketer to finally understand the importance of SEO to their long term success on the internet.

Search Engines are a dynamic online compilation of websites that have met certain criteria (as set by each search engine). A user searches for a particluar word or phrase on the search engine and the search engine generates a list of appropriate and related sites to the search term. If you have adequately optimised your site for that particular search engine and term, then your website will be included in the results generated. The more highly optimised your site is, the higher your site will show in the results.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the technique that webmasters or internet marketers utilise to ensure their site is listed in the search engines for search terms relevant to their site. Given the huge growth of the internet in the last 10 years and the billions of websites proliferating the internet, there is fierce competition between webmasters to secure high rankings in the search results. The better the webmaster understands SEO, the better he will optimise his site and the higher his search ranking will be.

There are many methods a webmaster can use to increase the page rank of his site, but the most effective way is to continually provide relevant, high quality content. There are millions of ineffectual, dull and boring sites that totally fail to provide anything remotely useful that a potential visitor would be interested in reading, therefore, sites that provide interesting, well-written and regularly updated content that engages their visitors are more likely to achieve higher search results, and in turn they will attract even more visitors to their site.

Try to update your site on a weekly basis at least, adding small amounts of material each time. This will keep the search engines returning to your site, so they can keep their listings as up to date and relevant as they can. Each time the search engines crawl your site and find new material, it will assist in increasing your search rankings. This is especially important if you are an internet marketer planning to sell either a product or service as most likely the majority of your visitors will come via a search engine.

The next most important item in your SEO strategy is to incorporate keywords (search terms or phrases) within your content. Research your niche and try to identify the search terms (keywords) visitors use to locate the information that relates to your site. By learning the search terms your potential visitors use, you can include them within your content. The higher the number of related keywords you include, the more relevant your website appears to the search engines and the higher your site will appear in the search results.

You should also instigate a linking strategy as part of your SEO. Links provide free advertising for your site but more significantly are seen as a sign of the importance of your website. The more links you have pointing to your site the more potential visitors are likely to find you and you will subsequently experience a rise in your search engine rankings.

When updating the content of your site, keep in mind that people who are searching on the internet are looking for information. Writing articles that are relvant to your niche is a great way of providing your visitors with the information they’re looking for. Articles are easy to write and you can also submit them to various article directories as well. This in turn will assist your linking strategy by providing additional links back to your site from your articles which are posted on external directories. When you update an article on your site, it is a good idea to archive the original one, so your visitors can return to it if they choose to. This also means that the search engines will also continue to list them in their search result as well.

If you can achieve these basic steps first and foremost you will be well along the road to successful SEO.
